MARCHING BAND

 

All students who have demonstrated their ability to perform to a standard acceptable to the instructional staff shall be a member of the Marching Band. Certain band members may be used as reserves or alternates, to fill any vacancies created by illness, absence, or to replace a person who is not performing up to the set standard. Just as playing auditions are held for placement in the Symphony Band, so shall all students demonstrate a reasonable proficiency in marching fundamentals as well as a good attendance record before they are assigned a definite position in the marching formation. On the days that the band will have marching rehearsal, members should wear clothing suitable to the weather. Sneakers or tennis shoes should be worn for all marching rehearsals. These shoes may be kept in your instrument slot during marching season.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Band I, II, III, IV (1 credit each course)

Prerequisites : Band Director approval and must be enrolled in Instrumental Ensemble I, II, III, or IV. Student will be required to participate in the drug testing program as specified by Marble Falls ISD.

Description:  An organization designed to teach team work, self-discipline, and develop higher level thinking skills necessary to express one's self through music. This course will meet every other day for the entire school year. In the fall the organization will perform as the Marching Band and will perform at all varsity football games as well as various marching competitions. Students receive 1/2 PE credit for the 1st semester of Band and 1/2 Fine Art credit for the 2nd semester of Band. After the conclusion of the marching season the band will be divided into two separate concert organizations. Both groups will meet during the same class period but will rehearse in different areas of the bandhall. Membership in the concert bands will be determines by audition. The varsity level band (referred to as the Symphony Band) is the most advanced instrumental ensemble at Marble Falls High School . The Symphony Band will perform at least five concerts during the year, as well as participate in clinics and contests adjudicated by the best music educators in the country. Opportunities for solo performances will come from Region Band tryouts and Solo and Ensemble competition. The junior varsity level band (referred to as the Concert Band) is the 2nd performing instrumental ensemble at Marble Falls High School . The Concert Band will perform at least 3 concerts during the year, as well as participate in clinics and contests. This course is designed for those students who may not be fundamentally developed enough to qualify for the Symphony Band.

 

STUDENTS MUST BE ENROLLED IN BOTH BAND AND INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE FOR BOTH THE FALL AND SPRING TERM

Instrumental Ensemble I, II, III, IV (1 credit each course)

Description: This course is an extension of the skills taught in Band I, II, III, and IV. This course will meet every other day for the entire school year. Students will be grouped according to instrumental families and concentrate on refining the performance skills that are inherent to that particular instrument. Time will be spent in class breaking up into sectionals to refine those skills. In the fall students will concentrate on those performance skills that are emphasized in marching band. After marching season is over emphasis will switch to concert performance as well as attention to soloistic development through All-Region auditions as well as solo and small ensemble opportunities.

SYMPHONY BAND

At the end of marching season, the Marching Band will begin the transition to the Symphony Band. Placement will be determined by an audition conducted by the band staff. This audition will be used to determine parts through Christmas. A second audition will be held in January to determine placement and parts for the rest of the year. Music for this audition will be announced at the end of Marching season.

CONCERT BAND

Concert band is a performing group that will meet in the Spring Term. Students selected for Concert band will receive more individualized instruction to increase fundamental playing skills. This band may or may not be a separate competing group from the Symphony band, depending on instrumentation and eligibility.

JAZZ BAND

JAZZ BAND INFO

When there is sufficient amount of student interest, a Jazz Band will be organized on a yearly basis. Entrance into Jazz Band will be by invitation or audition only. The Jazz Band will meet for the full year on an AB schedule  and perform for local civic organizations and concerts. To be eligible for participation a student must be a member of the Symphony Band and marching band. Vacancies may be filled by invitation.

Course Description :

Jazz Band I, II, III, IV ( 1 credit each course)

Prerequisites : Band Director approval. Student must also be a member of the MFHS marching and concert bands and student will be required to participate in the drug testing program as specified by Marble Falls ISD.

Description : Students will be exposed to different jazz styles such as swing, be-bop, blues rock, and funk. Instrumentation is limited to: 2 alto saxophones, 2 tenor saxophones, 1 baritone saxophone, 3 to 5 trombones, 3 to 5 trumpets, 1 piano, 2 percussionists (trap set and auxiliary), electric bass and guitar. This course will be taught every other day for the whole year.
